South Carolina voters went to the polls on Tuesday to decide primaries in runoffs for one Congressional district, eight Senate primaries, and four House districts. These runoffs were forced due to the failure of any candidate to receive 50% +1 vote in the initial primary election held on June 11.

U.S. HOUSE OF REPRESENTATIVES DISTRICT 3

REPUBLICAN PRIMARY
Sheri Biggs 50.99% X
Mark Burns 49.01%

To replace retiring Congressman Jeff Duncan, McMaster-endorsed military veteran and nurse practitioner Sheri Biggs defeats Trump-endorsed Rev. Mark Burns by 1,087 votes out of 55,173 cast. She will face Democrat Bryon Best in November.

Ben Carper 48.33%
Jason Elliott 51.67% X

Greenville Attorney Jason Elliott moves from the SC House to the SC Senate defeating Ben Carper. Elliott replaces retiring State Senator Dwight Loftis, who was first elected in a 2019 special election. There is no Democratic candidate for this seat.

Greenwood, Lexington, and Saluda Counties
REPUBLICAN PRIMARY
Charles Bumgardner 43.80%
Billy Garrett 56.20% I X

Incumbent Senator Billy Garrett fends off a primary challenge for the Senate seat he won in 2020 by upsetting incumbent Democrat Floyd Nicholson. Garrett goes on to face Democratic nominee Francie Kleckley in November.

Greenville and Spartanburg Counties
REPUBLICAN PRIMARY
Lee Bright 48.84%
Roger Allen Nutt 51.16% X

In a contentious Republican primary and runoff for the seat held by retiring Republican Scott Talley, Rep. Roger Nutt defeats former Senator Lee Bright by 143 votes. He will face Democratic candidate Octavia Amaechi in November.

DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY
Ivory Thigpen 46.36%
Overture Walker 53.64% X

Senator Mia McLeod announced her retirement earlier this year. Ivory Thigpen has served in the SC House since 2016 and Overture Walker on the Richland County Council since 2020. McLeod-endorsed Walker will face Workers Party Gary Votour in November.

Carlisle Kennedy 62.47% X
Katrina Shealy 37.53% I

Senator Katrina Shealy has represented Lexington County in the Senate since 2012, when she won a petition campaign against incumbent Jake Knotts. Leesville lawyer Carlisle Kennedy, whose father served in the SC House, is the new Senator, as no Democrat filed for Senate District 23.

Jason Guerry 54.73% X
Chris Smith 45.27%

Incumbent Democratic Senator Dick Harpootlian faced significant criticism after he served as defense attorney for Alex Murdaugh last year. In a significant upset, Representative Russell Ott beat him for the Democratic nomination two weeks ago. Ott served in the SC House since 2013. Construction industry business owner Jason Guerry will face Ott in November.

Calhoun, Clarendon, Orangeburg, and Sumter Counties

Lindsay Agostini 29.19%
Mike Jones 70.81% X
DEMOCRATIC PRIMARY
Austin B Floyd Jr 49.66%
Jeffrey R Graham 50.34% X

It has been a contentious election on both sides to replace retiring Senator Thomas McElveen. Jones (an Army veteran and entrepreneur) and Agostini (a Richland 2 School Board member) advanced to a Republican runoff after a four-way primary, which Jones won handily. Former Camden Mayor and current Camden City Councilman Jeffrey Graham wins for the Democrats by only 24 votes, beating out educator and activist Floyd. Republicans hope to flip the seat red in November.

James Galyean 45.94%
Blake Sanders 54.06% X

Former West Pelzer Mayor Sanders is the new House member for District 9, as there is no Democratic candidate on the ballot in November. He fills the seat of retiring Representative Anne Thayer defeating James Galyean by about 300 votes.

Kerri J Smith 33.55%

In the race to replace retiring Freedom Caucus member Ashley Trantham, Trantham-endorsed Huff wins and will face perennial Democratic candidate J. Fritz Wiebel in November.

Freedom Caucus-friendly Edgerton is the new House member for the seat of Roger Nutt, who is now the Republican nominee for Senate District 12. No Democrat filed to run for the seat.
