Dr. Richard Gilder III brings a lifetime of experience as an educator, investor, and philanthropist to his role on the Palmetto Promise Institute Board of Directors. A passionate advocate for classical education and literacy, Dr. Gilder currently serves as a Senior Adjunct Instructor at the College of Charleston, where he teaches Latin, Ancient Greek and Classical Mythology to students at all levels.

Over the course of his 40-year teaching career, Dr. Gilder has taught students ranging from elementary school to graduate programs, blending rigorous scholarship with an engaging, student-centered approach. He is the author of Via Facilis: Mastering Latin and Understanding Language, a widely used introductory Latin textbook that emphasizes language mastery through the study of Latin.

Dr. Gilder holds a PhD in Classical Studies from the University of Pennsylvania, an MA in Classics from the Graduate School and University Center, CUNY, and a BA in Religion (Early Christianity) from Haverford College.

Beyond the classroom, Dr. Gilder has demonstrated a deep commitment to expanding educational opportunity. He is the founder of The Latin Programme: Via Facilis, a UK-based nonprofit that brings Latin instruction to public school students as a tool for improving literacy. He also served for seven years as Chair of the Trustees Committee at Xavier University of Louisiana, supporting the mission of this distinguished HBCU.

In addition to his academic work, Dr. Gilder is a private investor and an active philanthropist, supporting causes that align with his passion for education, youth development, and community impact. A longtime lacrosse coach, he has mentored young athletes with the same dedication he brings to the classroom.

Dr. Gilder’s broad experience and deep commitment to educational excellence make him a valuable voice in Palmetto Promise’s mission to expand opportunity and empower the next generation of South Carolinians.
