A recap of South Carolina’s eventful National School Choice Week
Last week, Palmetto Promise Institute and My SC Education joined states across the country in celebrating the 10th Annual National School Choice Week. Here are some of the highlights from the eventful week.
Governor Henry McMaster declared support for K-12 education choice in a new video.
“Everybody doesn’t learn the same way. We must give our parents the choice to send their children to places that they believe will suit their needs the best… it’s time to unleash the free market in education.”
Lt. Governor Pamela Evette joined Palmetto Promise and My SC Education to present the Governor’s official South Carolina School Choice Week proclamation.

Both the South Carolina Senate and House adopted resolutions recognizing January 26 – February 1 as National School Choice Week in South Carolina.
“That the members of the South Carolina Senate, by this resolution, recognize the week of January 26 through February 1, 2020 as “National School Choice Week” in South Carolina and congratulate students, parents, teachers, and school leaders from K-12 educational environments of all varieties for their persistence, achievements, dedication, and contributions to their communities in South Carolina.”
Students, families, and school administrators from across South Carolina rallied for school choice at the Statehouse.
Students from Second Baptist Christian Preparatory School in Aiken, SC, had the opportunity to visit (pictured below) their Senator, Shane Massey, who is the sponsor of the Education Scholarship Account (ESA) bill to give parents more educational choices.
Those participating also were recognized in the House gallery while the South Carolina House of Representatives was in session.
Dr. Shaunette Parker joined Judi Gatson with WIS for interview during School Choice Week.
They discussed the biggest changes they want to see in education reform. Watch that interview on Facebook.
My SC Education held an Education Choice Fair and School Supply Giveaway in Charleston to celebrate National School Choice Week.
This event was an opportunity to engage with and educate parents in the Lowcountry on all the education options that are available in South Carolina including public schools, private schools, charter schools, virtual schools and homeschooling networks.
In Aiken, My SC Education hosted a showing of Miss Virginia, a film about a Washington, DC mom (Virginia Walden Ford) who fought to be able to send her son to the school of her choice.
